STATEMENT
21 August 1990

The NutraSweet Company welcomes the decision of the Broadcasting Complaints Commission upholding the complaint of unfair treatment by "Good Morning Sussex" broadcast by BBC Radio Sussex on 9th September 1989. The complaint of unfair treatment arose out of an interview of a lecturer from Sussex University who said he had circumstantial evidence of side effects suffered by some people who had consumed NutraSweet. The Commission found that, despite being aware of the facts, Radio Sussex unfairly failed to make clear that numerous scientific studies had not established any such link. A company spokesman said:

"We brought the complaint because of concern that listeners would be misled. NutraSweet has been subjected to more rigorous testing than any other food product. It has been passed as safe by the regulatory authorities in over 70 countries and is consumed by over 200 million people daily. It is still of concern that BBC Radio Sussex gave a platform to someone without introducing any balancing statement."
